Suwinski and Vogelbach give Hrs, Pirates beat Yankees

Rookie outfielder Jack Suwinski hit his 14th homer of the season, Daniel Vogelbach hit 11 and the Pirates beat the New York Yankees 5-2 Tuesday night to mar Jameson Taillon’s return to Pittsburgh.

Taillon (9-2), one of the Pirates’ top draft picks and who spent more than a decade with the organization before being traded to New York in January 2021, dropped for the first time since March 11. april.

He gave up a solo shot from Vogelbach in the first inning and a two-run shot from Suwinski in the fourth, just over the center-field wall.

Taillon was retired with one out in the sixth after giving up five runs on six hits in a job that included five strikeouts.

Jose Quintana (2-4) controlled the Yankees for five innings and the Pittsburgh bullpen did the rest. David Bednar pitched in the ninth for 13 saves, and the Pirates condemned the Yankees to consecutive losses for just the fifth time this season.

For the Yankees, Venezuelan Gleyber Torres 3-2 with a run scored.

For the Pirates, the Dominican Oneil Cruz 3-0 with a run scored and an RBI. Puerto Rican Michael Pérez 3-0. The Venezuelan Diego Castillo 1-0.
