Suella Braverman: In Britain, Indian-origin Home Minister Suella Braverman was nominated for the Queen Elizabeth II Woman of the Year award at a ceremony. This is the first ever award in this category. Braverman, who was inducted into the cabinet of British Prime Minister Liz Truss this month, said it was an honor to take on a new role at the Asian Achievers Awards 2022, dedicated to the late Queen.

Home Minister sends record message
Braverman, daughter of Tamil-origin Uma and Goa-born Christie Fernandes, sent a recorded message to the ceremony, where her parents received the award on her behalf. Braverman said in his message that “My mother and father came from Kenya and Mauritius in the 1960s. He is a proud member of our Asian community and I was born in Wembley, the central center of the Asian community.”

It recognizes the achievements of individuals from the South Asian community in the UK. Among the Persons of Indian Origin declared winners in various categories, broadcaster Naga Munchettty was given the award in the Media category. Karanjit Kaur Bains has received the Sports Personality of the Year award. She is the first female Sikh weightlifter to represent Britain at the global level. The Lifetime Achievement Award has been given to Kartar Lalvani, the founder of UK-based health brand Vitabiotics.
