Student budget undermined under Emmanuel Macron, according to UNEF

A study published this Sunday, August 15 by the UNEF shows that the student budget will increase even more at the beginning of the 2021 school year.

Thus, for the next school year, the union foresees an average increase in the cost of living for students of 2.5% compared to 2020, that is, 247 euros per year. “This increase is due, in particular, to the increase in rents in the provinces and in the suburbs of Paris,” the report explains.

But Unef especially points to the policy of the President of the Republic since 2017. Thus, “the students have lost every year [près de 40 euros] in direct aid since Emmanuel Macron came to power ”, estimates the organization, while at the same time the cost of student life has increased by more than 10%.

The Unef assures that “amounts of 41.2 million euros of budgetary coupons” on the basis of direct aid to students between 2017 and 2019. The change in the mode of calculations of the aides au logement (APL) is notoriously criticized for the Union.

The influence of Emmanuel Macron’s politics on student budgets is even more visible compared to his predecessors. According to the UNEF report, young people had indeed earned 45 euros a year during Nicolas Sarkozy’s term and no less than 92 euros a year during François Hollande’s.

To better fight against student insecurity, UNEF considers it necessary to reform the scholarship system. This could make it possible to increase its amount, expand the number of beneficiaries, but also integrate foreign students.

The union also asks for a “grant of autonomy for each young person in training, without condition of resources.”
