Strong earthquake in western Haiti

A major earthquake shook western Haiti this Saturday and was felt across the Caribbean, where people fled their homes for fear that their homes would collapse.

the earthquake of magnitude 7 took place 8 kilometers from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, about 150 kilometers west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and with a depth of 10 kilometers, said the United States Geological Survey.

The country is still recovering from a magnitude 7 earthquake near the capital 11 years ago that killed dozens – if not hundreds of thousands – of people and destroyed many buildings, leaving many homeless.

“Everyone is very scared. It’s been years since there was such a big earthquake”said Daniel Ross, a resident of the city of Guantanamo in eastern Cuba, adding that his home remained secure but the furniture shook, according to the agency. Reuters.

The US Tsunami Warning System indicated that there were no tsunami warnings after the earthquake.
