The constituents met solemnly in San Cristóbal. They worked on the drafting of the Constitution for two months and on November 6, 1844, they finished their work, presenting to the Governing Board a draft Constitution based on the separation of powers and the preeminence of the Legislative Power over the Executive Power.
This is how the Dominican Republic was born as an independent nation that represents until today, 178 years later, our Magna Carta.
It defines us as a republic and sets out the statutory rules of behavior, the fulfillment of our rights, but also our duties as citizens. We are satisfied that we must comply with them. Because they are ours. Dominicans.
In addition to the transformations of the Dominican Constitution during its 178 years, from the first day of its birth, there is no doubt that it represents the fundamental bases for the sustainability of our nation.
It should be noted that, of all those transformations that our Magna Carta has undergone, the constitutional reform of 2010 has been the most important.seeing it from the point of view of the socialization that it was subjected to for its approval, up to its results.
The creation of the Constitutional Court and the high courts, for us, is part of one of the fundamental axes so that there is a perfect assessment of what can be defined as the constitutional spirit and that every Dominican can appreciate it that way.
Thus, the creation of a Constitutional Court that guarantees the supremacy of the Constitution, the defense of the constitutional order and the protection of fundamental rights.
And the fact that the decisions rendered by that court are final and irrevocable and constitute binding precedents for the public powers and all State bodies.
As well as the enjoyment of administrative and budgetary autonomy, it offers the country a totally independent body from the other powers and a guarantor of the fundamental rights of man.
That is why, today, we want to raise our voice, in defense of our Constitution. It is necessary to express our disagreements with any attempt to reform our Constitution for particular interests and not collective ones.
Of wanting to adapt that precious Magna Carta, based on respect for human dignity and the indissolubility of the union of our nation, to merely partisan political interests.
Every time we come up with a party idea we want to reform our Constitution.
Enough is enough, let’s respect and be guardians of our Constitution!
