The great Steven Wilson is about to release his eighth studio album, and the excitement is building up. Not only is the album on its way, but a film accompanying “The Overview” has already been screened for a select few, and Mexican fans will also get the chance to experience it. “I am sure that this will be an amazing experience,” says Steven Wilson about The Overview projection.
The album, which consists of only two songs, “Objects Outlives US” and “The Overview”, exceeds 42 minutes of playback. This is not unusual for the leader of Porcupine Tree, known for his ambitious projects. The Overview is based on the “overview effect”, a cognitive change experienced by astronauts who have seen the Earth from space. The album aims to transport the listener to this experience, evoking feelings of beauty and insignificance in the face of the vastness of space. As Steven Wilson explains, “The album presents images and stories of life on earth, both good and bad.”
The Overview has the collaboration of Andy Partridge, the legendary vocalist of XTC, who helped Wilson tell the story behind “Objects Outlive Us”. The album also features winks to Wilson’s extensive career, including sounds reminiscent of Porcupine Tree’s classic albums and elements of “The Raven that Refused to Sing”. The film, which will be screened in select Cinemex cinemas on March 12, promises to be an immersive experience, with visually impressive animated sequences that document the immensity of space and the small part that humans occupy in it.
Wilson had initially planned to work on the album alone, but ultimately ended up with the support of his usual collaborators, including Craig Blundell on drums, Adam Holzman on keyboards, and Randy McStine on guitars. The result is an album that is both a personal and universal exploration of the human experience. The Overview will be released on March 14, and fans in Mexico can look forward to Wilson’s tour, which includes dates on October 13 and 14, 2025. With its unique blend of music and visual storytelling, The Overview is an event not to be missed.
