Steven Tyler’s Vocal Injury Permanent, Aerosmith Retires From Touring

Steven Tyler, the legendary voice of Aerosmith, has given his all to rock and roll. This dedication, however, has certainly taken its toll on his physical health over the years. Fans are now facing the reality that his touring days are behind him, a bittersweet end to an incredible run.

Back in 2006, Tyler underwent surgery on his vocal cords. He had a bleeding blood vessel in his throat that needed fixing. He bounced back after that operation and kept singing his heart out. But in September 2023, another vocal injury hit, bringing his band’s ‘Peace Out: The Farewell Tour’ to a sudden halt.

Aerosmith shared the tough news on Instagram. They explained that Steven’s vocal injury was “more serious than initially thought.” Doctors confirmed he not only had damage to his vocal cords but also a fractured larynx. This kind of injury needs constant medical attention. Tyler himself expressed his sorrow, saying it “breaks my heart not to be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers, and the incredible Black Crowes, rockin’ with the best fans in the world.” He promised they would return “as soon as we can!”

Steven Tyler has been the frontman for Aerosmith since 1970. He joined up with Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry, and Brad Whitford to form the iconic group. They’ve released 15 albums together, and it seems they might still have new music in the pipeline.

The Long Road to Recovery, or Lack Thereof

The question on everyone’s mind has been whether Steven Tyler can still sing. Aerosmith gave a heartbreaking update on Instagram in August 2024. They revealed that a full recovery for Tyler’s vocal injury is simply “not possible.” The band highlighted how unique Steven’s voice is. They added that he spent months working tirelessly to get his voice back. Despite having the best medical team, they witnessed his struggle, and it became clear that his voice would never fully return to its pre-injury state.

This painful news led the group to announce their official retirement from full-scale touring. While Tyler has managed a few special, one-off performances since his injury became public, the grueling schedule of a complete tour is no longer something he can sustain.

A Friend’s Insight and Recent Appearances

Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum, a good friend of Tyler’s, offered some clarity in February 2025. He noted that Steven had sung for the first time in a year and a half. This led some fans to wonder if he was recovering. Sorum explained that it was a huge moment for Tyler after being badly hurt. However, he confirmed, “Now, is he going to tour again? No, he’s not.”

Despite the end of touring, Tyler hasn’t completely stepped away from the stage. In September 2025, the rock icon performed at the MTV Video Music Awards. He was there to pay tribute to fellow legend Ozzy Osbourne. Reports also suggested that in that same month, he was set to join his bandmate Joe Perry for The Who’s farewell concert at the Hollywood Bowl. These isolated appearances show his spirit is still willing, even if his body can’t handle the full grind.

The Music Lives On

Even with the touring days winding down, new music might still be on the horizon. Yungblud confirmed in September 2025 that he has five new songs recorded with Aerosmith. He shared his plans to release them, suggesting that the creative spark within Aerosmith hasn’t completely dimmed. It seems Steven Tyler’s voice will still echo, just in new and different ways.
