Steam Deck: the first benchmarks are there and show a console that lives up to expectations

The Steam Deck is Valve’s new portable “console” and allows you to play all Steam titles. A Chinese user was able to get his hands on the machine and give us his first in-house benchmarks. All the biggest games manage to hit 30 frames per second.

The Steam Deck came as a surprise to its announcement and since then all players have been eagerly awaiting whether the portable machine will live up to its promises. Valve says all Steam games will run smoothly at 30 frames per second. A performance acquired thanks to AMD CPU under Zen 2 architecture and RDNA 2 GPU.

a Chinese user was able to get his hands on the machine and did some testing. We therefore have here the first “in-house” benchmarks carried out by an individual. He’s tested on four games in particular and it can be said that those are convincing, overall.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was thus able to reach 30 FPS by setting all graphics parameters to maximum. By lowering a little (in high), it reaches an average of 36 FPS. The tester then manually adjusted a few graphics options (without specifying which ones) to reach the sacrosanct 60 FPS.

Steam Deck runs Cyberpunk 2077 with some concessions

DOOM 2016 also runs correctly, since with the graphics in medium, it reaches 60 FPS. By cranking up a few options (again unknown) we drop to 46 FPS. DOTA 2, for its part, runs at an average of 47 FPS with graphics set to maximum, and 80 FPS to minimum.

The last game tested is Cyberpunk 2077. It is undoubtedly the most difficult test for the Steam Deck. In high, the title of CD Projekt oscillates between 20 and 30 FPS. You have to adjust the graphics to medium to have a playable game. On a 7-inch screen, that’s a concession that users will be able to accept.

Finally, the test evokes the heating and autonomy of the Steam Deck. In operation, the rear of the terminal reaches 42 degrees and the handles 29 degrees, which is acceptable. By playing three hours, the tested machine dropped from 100% to 46% battery. Here again, these are encouraging results.

As a reminder, the Steam Deck will arrive at the end of the year at a price of at least 419 euros.
