Starling Marte hits triple, double and single in the success of the Mets

Patrick Mazeika broke the tie with a home run in the seventh inning in his first major league game of the season, and the New York Mets, encouraged by Shakira, beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Saturday.

Mets manager Buck Showalter mentioned before the game how excited he was about Shakira’s visit to Citi Field.

The Colombian star posed for photos in front of the clubhouse with Showalter and several players. Later, she was smiling in the boxes, while she encouraged the team.

It brought him good luck. A series of defensive neglects by Seattle set the course for the match.

Starling Marte had a triple, a double and a single, in addition to scoring three times for New York, which squandered a 4-0 lead. Jesse Winker tied the game with a three-run homer off Chasen Shreve in the top of the seventh.

Mazeika, who batted ninth, found the first pitch from Andrés Muñoz (1-1) and hit the ball off the right-field foul pole for his second career home run.

Adam Ottavino (2-1) resolved the eighth inning without allowing a score. Puerto Rican Edwin Díaz struck out his three opponents in the ninth inning to reach eight saves.

The Yankees, who have the best record in the majors, had totaled 25 runs to win the first two games of the series. They drove in the tying run in the ninth inning, but a baserunning error deprived them of the opportunity to score more.

Fellow Cuban Robert followed up with his crucial hit to right field, sparking a jubilant celebration on the field.

Moncada homered and Dallas Keuchel pitched five scoreless innings for Chicago, which has won eight of 11 games.

New York had won 19 of 22 meetings.

The victory went to Liam Hendricks (1-2), who prescribed a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning.
