Starling Marte had three hits and the New York Mets maintained their season-long dominance over the Philadelphia Phillies, beating them 8-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The NL East-leading Mets have won 13 of 17 games against their divisional opponents this year, outscoring them by a combined 89 runs to 50.
New York improved to 6-2 at Citizens Bank Park during that span.
Michael Perez broke out of an 0-for-19 slump by hitting a two-run single in the fifth inning to start the attack. His countryman Francisco Lindor added an RBI triple in the sixth off former Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler (11-7).
Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil added two hits apiece for New York.
Mets pitchers Trevor Williams, Seth Lugo (3-2), Joely Rodriguez, Adam Ottavino and Sam Clay limited Philadelphia’s struggling lineup to six hits. Twelve runners were left stranded on the trails.
For the Mets, Dominican Starling Marte 4-3 with one run scored and one produced. Puerto Ricans Lindor 5-1 with two runs scored and one RBI, Pérez 3-1 with one run scored and two RBIs.
For the Phillies, Jean Segura 3-1 with an RBI. Panamanian Edmundo Sosa 2-1.
Detroit 4; Anaheim 3
Tyler Alexander pitched six strong innings and the Detroit Tigers’ bullpen finished the job for Saturday’s 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Tigers have lost two in a row and 10 of their last 12 meetings.
Alexander (3-7) allowed three runs on seven hits and walked six innings for his first win in eight starts this season. Detroit’s bullpen pitched six scoreless innings and Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.
Los Angeles’ Reid Detmers (4-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Shohei Ohtani led off the game with a double and scored on Luis Rengifo’s hit. Los Angeles went up 2-0 in the second on Andrew Velázquez’s home run.
The Tigers scored twice on five hits and a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. Jo Adell put Los Angeles back in front with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, but Jeimer Candelario had one in the bottom of the inning.
Venezuelan Víctor Reyes gave the Tigres a 4-3 lead with an RBI single off Panamanian reliever Jaime Barria in the fifth.
For the Angels, Venezuelan Luis Rengifo 4-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
For the Tigres, Dominican Willi Castro 4-1 with an RBI, Javier Báez 4-0. Venezuelan Harold Castro 3-1 with a run scored and his compatriot Víctor Reyes 4-2 with an RBI.
