There are about 58,000 refugees in India

President’s secretary Saman Ekanayake appointed the committee to efficiently repatriate minority Tamils from war-ravaged northern Sri Lanka. The committee was appointed at the request of the Eelam Refugee Resettlement Organization (OFERR) to repatriate Sri Lankans who had gone to India as refugees because of the war. “It was stated that there are currently around 58,000 Sri Lankans residing in Tamil Nadu, India as refugees and only 3,800 of them are ready to return to Sri Lanka,” the President’s Office said.

India and Sri Lanka have close relations

As of 2021, 58,843 Sri Lankans are living in 108 refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, according to India’s home ministry records. However, there were around 34,000 Lankan refugees, who were registered with the state authorities, living outside the camps. Sri Lanka’s Deputy High Commissioner’s office in Chennai is coordinating the move, while officials from Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Registrar General’s Department are on the committee. Unable to bear the ongoing financial crisis in the island nation, a large number of Tamils from northern Sri Lanka also left for Tamil Nadu recently. Tamils maintain close ties in Sri Lanka and India, with historical, cultural and religious ties over the years.

It will take time to recover the system due to the economic slowdown in Sri Lanka

It will take time for the country to recover from the economic slowdown in Sri Lanka in the last months. After Ranil Vikram Singhe became the new President of Sri Lanka, the anger of the people is gradually calming down. Now slowly, efforts are being made to bring the ruined economy back on track. So that the situation can be brought under control.

India played the role of brother

During the crisis in Sri Lanka, India was ready to help in every way. India helped selflessly during this time playing the role of brother. Whereas during this time countries like China selfishly helped Sri Lanka and in the name of this aid also hatched a conspiracy against India. When India opposed it, China started making excuses. When India lodged its protest with Sri Lanka as well, it started keeping distance from China. After that the situation came under control. During the recession, India also provided financial help ranging from food grains, water and medicines.
