Shrill cries of “Queen of Sinhala Cinema” echoed as Sri Lanka’s cricket team paid their last respects to the legendary Malini Fonseka. The actress, who passed away at 78, was a household name in the island nation. With a career spanning over five decades, she left an indelible mark on the film industry.
Malini’s journey in cinema began in 1968, and she went on to star in over 100 films, including several international productions. Her legacy extends beyond the silver screen, as she was also a member of parliament, elected in 2010. The cricket team, led by captain Dhananjaya de Silva and coach Sanath Jayasuriya, joined the nation in mourning the loss of a true icon.
A spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Cricket Board remembered Malini as a “symbol of strength, elegance, and talent.” Her record-breaking 12 consecutive Slim Nilssons People’s Awards is a testament to her enduring popularity. In 2010, a global media outlet ranked her among the top 25 actresses in Asian history.
As the cricket team bids farewell to Malini, they now shift their focus to their upcoming tour of Bangladesh. The two teams will clash in a two-Test series starting June 17, followed by three ODIs and three T20Is. With Sanath Jayasuriya at the helm as head coach, the team is gearing up for a challenging series. Meanwhile, plans are underway to host the Lanka Premier League in July and August.
The outpouring of tributes from the cricket fraternity is a reflection of Malini’s impact on Sri Lankan culture. As the nation continues to mourn her loss, her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come.
