Sri Lanka borrows oil from Russia

Severely affected by the economic crisis, Sri Lanka has asked Russia for a loan of oil.

On the social networking site Twitter, Sri Lankan President Gotabha Rajapaksa wrote that he had a fruitful telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

He thanked the Russian government for its support in overcoming past challenges and called for a loan of oil to meet the current economic challenge.

The Sri Lankan president wrote in another tweet that he had requested Russia to resume flights of Russian airline Aeroflot between Moscow and Colombo.

In a telephone call, the two leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral ties in areas such as tourism, trade and culture.
