Sporting CP forward Fotis Ioannidis dismissed talk of a personal scoring rivalry and the pressure of his transfer fee, asserting his focus remains on helping his team end a lengthy winless streak in Italy during their upcoming Champions League clash against Juventus.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s match in Turin, Ioannidis firmly stated he would not engage in a comparison of his scoring record with that of Benfica’s striker Pavlidis. “I won’t play that game,” Ioannidis said. He added that Pavlidis has been in Portugal for two years and knows the league well, noting both players have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Ioannidis also expressed no surprise or pressure regarding reports of a $22 million transfer fee. “I can still give more to the club,” he stated. He suggested that market values are constantly changing and reiterated his readiness to contribute to Sporting.
The upcoming match against Juventus presents Sporting with an opportunity to break a significant historical pattern. The Portuguese club has never secured a victory on Italian soil. Ioannidis remained optimistic about their chances. “Why wouldn’t we win tomorrow?” he questioned. “It can be in any game.”
Sporting arrives in Italy on a strong run, having not lost in their last six matches. Ioannidis highlighted the team’s positive momentum. “We are in good form, we are improving, and tomorrow we will have a big game against a great team,” he said, adding that the team “can’t wait to get on the field.”
Ioannidis reflected positively on his experience with Sporting since his arrival. He noted the club’s strong organization and praised his teammates and coach. “I am very happy to be at Sporting,” he affirmed.
When asked about his potential starting role, the number 9 forward indicated his flexibility. “Honestly, I don’t know,” he admitted. Ioannidis emphasized his commitment to the team, stating, “I am here to help the team in any circumstance. Whether as a starter or from the bench, I am always ready to help Sporting.”
