Sporting’s Champions League Comeback: Rui Silva Calls it a ‘Great Victory’

Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva lauded his team’s unwavering belief and resilience following a pivotal Champions League comeback victory against French rivals Marseille, emphasizing how crucial on-field events swung the momentum.

Speaking in the mixed zone at Estádio José Alvalade, Silva acknowledged the team started at a disadvantage against a high-quality, high-level opponent. He praised the squad for never giving up, even when trailing.

A significant turning point came with the expulsion of an opposing player, which Silva said provided a “plus of energy and confidence” to Sporting. Another critical moment was the non-award of a penalty against Sporting just before halftime.

Silva stated that a penalty in that situation could have led to a 2-0 deficit, potentially causing “some discouragement.” He expressed confidence he could have saved it, but highlighted the relief of the call.

He credited the “soul” of the team and their collective belief that victory was possible until the final whistle. Silva also noted that the half-time team talk contributed to the turnaround.

The goalkeeper hailed the squad as a “great group, a fantastic group” dedicated to representing Sporting. He added that all players, including substitutes, are prepared to deliver strong performances.

Looking ahead, Silva acknowledged the quick turnaround for an upcoming domestic match against Tondela. He emphasized the need for proper rest and recovery from the demanding Champions League encounter.
