For many athletes, joining a top club feels like a dream come true. It marks a big step up in their careers. Players often chase this goal for years. This week, two new faces joined Sporting CP’s women’s football team. They bring strength and fresh energy to the backline.

The club officially presented Ashley Barron and Mackenzie Cherry this Thursday. Both defenders will now wear the green and white jersey. They are the latest players to be called “lionesses,” a proud title for the team. Their arrival has been anticipated by many who follow the sport closely.

Mackenzie Cherry, 26, shared her excitement about the move. She had spent a few seasons in the league already. “You always want to move to bigger clubs, like Sporting,” Cherry explained. “Coming here and signing is a huge honor. It’s a major goal I’ve reached in my career.” Before this move, Cherry played 32 games for Valadares Gaia. She scored one goal and made two assists during her time there.

Ashley Barron, at 24, also spoke about her joy. “It’s a fantastic feeling to be here,” she said. Barron sees this chance as a rare gift. “This is one of those opportunities that don’t come around every day. I’m so excited for it.” She promised to give her all. “I’m ready to do my best. I want to bring everything I can to the team.” Last season, in 2024/2025, Barron played 26 games for Racing Power FC. She also scored one goal for her former club.

Their addition promises to fortify Sporting’s defense. Both players bring experience and a clear desire to succeed. They are ready to begin their new chapter with the club.
