Sporting, Roma Drawn for Women’s Champions League Third Qualifying Round

Sporting players celebrating

The path to European glory just became clearer, and tougher, for Sporting’s women’s team. A recent draw in Nyon, Switzerland, outlined their path. They will face Italian powerhouse Roma in the third qualifying round of the Women’s Champions League. This two-legged clash promises intense football.

Fans should mark their calendars for the key dates. The first leg will be played in Italy on September 11. The decisive return match is scheduled for September 18 in Lisbon, where Sporting will host the Italian side.

Only one team from this tie will advance to the main group stage of the Champions League. However, a silver lining awaits the team that does not prevail. The defeated club will enter the new UEFA Europa Cup, a fresh competition for European women’s football. Interestingly, Sp. Braga is also confirmed to participate in this new tournament.

Roma enters this qualifying round with something significant to prove. Last season, the Italian club narrowly missed claiming a third consecutive league title. They finished third in the Italian Women’s League. Strong contenders Juventus and Inter had edged them out for the top spots. This adds extra motivation for their European campaign.
