Sporting President’s Dignity Talk Sparks ‘Green Carpet’ Referee Bias Claims

A commentator aligned with FC Porto has launched sharp criticism against Sporting CP’s president, accusing him of hypocrisy and asserting that Sporting has benefited from systematic refereeing favoritism in recent seasons.

Tiago Silva, a lawyer and pundit for CMTV who supports FC Porto, responded to remarks made by Sporting CP President Frederico Varandas at the club’s “Rugidos do Leão” gala on Friday. Silva strongly refuted Varandas’ statements regarding “dignity and refereeing.”

Silva claimed Sporting had been “scandalously favored in these last two seasons.” He specifically cited instances involving referees like Nobres, Godinhos, and Veríssimos, as well as “tailored appointments.”

“It’s no wonder Varandas tries so hard to deny there’s a ‘green mantle’,” Silva told Record, adding that “serious errors benefiting Sporting hit us in the face every week.”

He further asserted that “what we saw in Sporting’s games this year…was a green carpet laid out to lead Sporting to the top.” Silva mentioned specific matches played in Nacional, Estoril, Famalicão, at home against Alverca, and in the Azores as examples.

Varandas had used the gala as a platform to criticize rival clubs.

Silva then turned his attention to Varandas’ own past conduct, calling him “the president who most attacked, pressured and conditioned referees in Portuguese football.”

He questioned if Varandas believed people had “forgotten his half-time and end-of-game tunnel visits to pressure referees.” Silva also referenced a “public veto” of referee João Pinheiro and “live conditioning” of Tiago Martins.

Silva recalled Varandas’ “inflamed conferences” where he purportedly promised, “if we have to shout, we’ll shout very loud.”

The lawyer concluded by stating, “What changed was not ‘dignity.’ What changed is that now the wind blows in their favor because many are blowing for them.”

He also provided context, noting Varandas had recently attacked FC Porto over a “television episode” related to a match against Sp. Braga. This rebuttal by Silva served as a direct response.
