The heart of Sporting’s volleyball defense will beat on. Maria Carlos, the team’s veteran libero, has signed a new contract. She will stay with the Lions for another season. Sporting confirmed the news in a recent statement.
Carlos, 41, shared her joy about the deal. “There’s no better feeling than signing again with the club you love most,” she said. She also looked back at the last season. “It was a tough year for us,” she admitted. “We got to a point where we felt we could win more titles. But we couldn’t make it happen.”

That feeling of falling short fuels her desire for the new season. “We’re starting fresh with that in mind,” Carlos explained. “I’m truly happy to be part of this chance to set things right this year.” She highlighted the team’s strong foundation. This solid core will be vital for new players joining the squad.
“We have our base players in place,” she noted. “They include both experienced athletes and younger ones. These players already get how the group works. They also understand the coach’s game plan.” Carlos believes this established group will help new teammates fit in easily. “Our team spirit last year was great,” she added. “I think the returning players and the new faces will create an amazing group again.”
Carlos also believes in a bit of healthy competition. “Internal team rivalries are always good,” she stated. “We push each other, we put pressure on each other in practice. We also have fun together.” This dynamic, she feels, makes them better. “It helps us become more united,” she said. “And we improve both our technical skills and our tactical play.”
Looking ahead, Carlos has her sights on the Super Cup. This first competition of the 2025/2026 season is a must-win. “It’s key to start with a victory,” she insisted. “That’s a trophy that stays with you right away.” She expects a challenging match. “It will be an interesting game,” she predicted. “Other teams are strengthening their squads too. But we are here to win that first competition.”
Finally, Carlos had a message for the loyal Sporting supporters. “Keep showing up, just like you always do,” she urged. “Even more, if possible.” She praised their dedication. “We count on your support,” she said. “You’ve been spectacular.” Carlos finished with a heartfelt thanks. “There’s truly no club with fans like ours,” she declared. “They’re always there to back us. I hope to see all of them at Pavilhão João Rocha next season, at every single game.”
