Get ready, handball fans, because a promising young talent is set to join one of the sport’s powerhouse clubs. Filipe Monteiro, a dynamic 21-year-old, is officially signing with Sporting’s handball team. He’ll be hitting the court in green and white for the 2025/26 season.
Monteiro is no stranger to the spotlight. He recently turned heads as a key player for Portugal’s U21 national team. During the U21 World Cup, he showed off his scoring power, netting an impressive 21 goals. Before this big move, he honed his skills with teams like Águas Santas, ADA Maia, and ABC.
Sporting is currently the national champion, a title they’ve held for the past two seasons. This signing shows the club is serious about staying on top. They’re clearly investing in young players who can help them keep winning.
Monteiro is thrilled about joining such a successful squad. “It’s a pleasure for me to play for the current National Champion,” he shared. “Sporting has built a project with a lot of potential in recent years. The young center player admitted the offer came as a surprise. “Honestly, I wasn’t expecting the proposal,” he said. “But when it came, it was a unique opportunity. I simply couldn’t refuse it.” He’s already dreaming of playing in Sporting’s home arena, Pavilhão João Rocha. “It’s always tough to play here as an opponent,” he noted. “But now, it’s going to be so much better having this ‘full house’ supporting me.” His excitement for his new “home” is palpable.
