The air still felt heavy after the Super Cup match in the Algarve. Words thrown in the heat of the game often echo longest. That’s certainly true for the harsh comments made by the Benfica coach towards Fábio Veríssimo, the referee for that big match. Sporting, known as “the Lions” by their fans, recently filed a formal complaint about this. They sent it to the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation.

But here’s the kicker: Sporting didn’t just complain for the sake of it. They only moved forward because they felt the Disciplinary Council hadn’t done enough about the situation. This feeling grew stronger when the summary reports from the trophy game finally came out last Friday. It seemed like the council had been slow to act.

“Go to hell, mate!” the coach, seen as the general of Benfica’s “Red” army, reportedly shouted. Those words sparked the whole dispute. Benfica quickly fired back on Saturday night. They released a statement responding to Sporting’s action.

Benfica, who are the two-time national champions, did not hold back. They called Sporting’s decision a “pseudo victory.” They meant it was a fake win, a hollow triumph. They even took a subtle jab. Benfica reminded everyone that they themselves had just watched another rival lift a championship trophy at the end of July. It was their way of saying Sporting’s small complaint was nothing compared to real victories.
