Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse: Box office smashes Super Mario Bros. movie record for 2023

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse broke a very big record set in 2023 by The Super Mario Bros. the film. The Spider-Verse film, which was released on June 2 across the Atlantic and May 30 in France, follows the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse from 2018, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature that year. The sequel follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he embarks on an all-new adventure in the multiverse where he encounters even more iterations of himself, all of whom must team up against a new villain.

According to Deadline, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should have a blistering opening weekend, well beyond its initial forecast of $80 million. With $51.7 million on Friday, it had the best opening day of 2023 so far, more so than Super Mario Bros. which had already broken all records, and on its way to a projection of $113 million in revenue over three days. That’s more than triple the original film’s opening weekend Into the Spider-Versewhich had grossed $35 million before grossing $375 million worldwide.

Although the revenue from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse likely won’t reach Mario’s opening weekend’s $146 million, that opening day record is still huge. Being in competition with Mario is a remarkable feat considering the impact of this film on the box office of 2023. If Spider-Verse manages to pull in even a fraction of that movie’s $1.2 billion gross, it will far surpass its 2018 predecessor.
