The entertainment world is reeling from tragic news out of Germany, where Spanish trapeze artist Marina Barceló, known professionally as Marina B., died during a live circus act. The talented performer was just 27 years old. The heartbreaking incident happened on Saturday, September 27, at Circus Paul Busch in Bautzen. Marina fell a terrifying five meters during her act, passing away at the scene.
More than 80 people, including many children, saw the accident unfold. The German newspaper Bild reported that the audience reacted with screams, and some parents quickly covered their children’s eyes before rushing out of the tent. "We can’t believe what happened," a circus worker told the publication, describing the shock felt by everyone present.
Police spokesperson Stefan Heiduck confirmed that a crisis response team was immediately sent to help both the upset spectators and the circus staff. According to reports from the Majorca Daily Bulletin, authorities are treating the event as a workplace accident. Initial findings suggest no one else was at fault. Acrobats typically handle their own equipment setup, making third-party blame unlikely.
Investigation and Concerns
Ralf Huppertz, who leads the Association of German Circus Companies, suggested a possible unknown health issue. He wondered if Marina might have felt dizzy on the trapeze. Huppertz noted that it’s unusual for such a skilled artist to not survive a five-meter fall. He also stated, "Art is a dangerous profession. Some acts simply cannot be properly secured."
Heiduck also mentioned that Marina was not wearing a safety rope. However, he clarified that she was not required to wear one. Performers decide for themselves if they will use safety gear. There was no one else on the stage when the accident happened, he added.
Following the tragedy, Circus Paul Busch announced it has canceled its upcoming tour. "Please understand that our management is currently very busy dealing with this terrible event," a circus spokesperson told People magazine. "We have canceled this year’s tour due to this incident and need time to recover."
A Life of Passion
Karsten Vogt, the mayor of Bautzen, shared his deepest sympathies with Marina’s family. "On behalf of the city, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones," he said, as reported by the Daily Bulletin. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic accident."
Marina, originally from Mallorca, Spain, started as a gymnast. She switched to trapeze artistry in 2018. She had performed in many countries, including Poland, Germany, Spain, and Andorra. Marina truly loved her craft. "For me, every show is an opportunity to share my passion for what I do," she once said about her circus career, according to Bild. "I believe art has the power to create unforgettable moments."

Marina often posted about her career on Instagram, showing pictures of her practice and performances. In August, she shared a photo of herself floating in the air, with the caption: "Worth every second 🫀." Her dedication to her art was clear, leaving a lasting impression on those who followed her journey.
