The controversy surrounding the ACB policy has sparked a heated debate, with Xabi-López Arostegui, the first Basque player to win a basketball championship with Spain in 2022, weighing in on the issue. “It’s quite shameful that there are ACB teams without Spanish players,” he exclaimed. The fact that teams are resorting to “tricks” to avoid playing with Spaniards is particularly galling, given the consistent success of Spanish teams in international competitions. Arostegui pointed out that the national team and lower categories have achieved numerous medals, demonstrating the wealth of talent in Spanish basketball.
Arostegui, who currently plays for Valencia Basket, believes that the league should prioritize nurturing Spanish talent. He noted that many talented players are seeking opportunities in the NBA, with some even “escaping” to the United States. The situation is exemplified by Saski Baskonia, a team from his homeland, which doesn’t have any Spanish players on its roster – the only exception being coach Pablo Laso. This trend is concerning, as it suggests that Spanish teams are not investing in their own talent.
Currently in Guadalajara, Arostegui made these statements before heading to Latvia for the Eurobasket 2025 qualification matches. As one of the more experienced players on the team, he’s happy to help the younger players integrate and find their place. “I am happy to be here,” he said. “I am one of the most veterans, of those who has the most experience in the team, and I am happy to be able to help the youngest to integrate.”
His comments echo those made by Juancho Hernángómez at the Giant gala, where he expressed his disappointment at seeing teams without any Spanish players on staff, calling it “a bit shameful.” The sentiment is clear: there needs to be a greater emphasis on developing and showcasing Spanish talent in the ACB.
