Spanish Age Championships Launched as CSD’s Strongest Bet for Sports Development

In a recent interview with Radio Brand Limit, Aitor Canibe, Deputy General Director of High Performance at the Higher Sports Council, shared his enthusiasm for the new edition of the Spanish Age Championships (CESA). He emphasized that this project is one of the strongest bets of the CSD, with 30 Spanish championships taking place in 13 communities. Canibe expressed his excitement about the project, particularly with the development of this year’s edition, which will feature 39 championships in Spain and will be tied to other CSD initiatives like Team Spain Future.

The goal of Team Spain Future is to identify and develop talent from a national level, and the Spanish age championships are a crucial part of this process. Canibe explained that these championships represent all autonomous communities and cities, with selections from each region. This means that the initial selection process occurs at the regional level, allowing for the detection and development of talent at various stages. As Canibe put it, “the stars of the present will be our representation of the future.”

Canibe highlighted the importance of having strong school championships to achieve a sports-oriented country with less sedentary people and a competitive elite that yields good international results. He praised the efforts of clubs, municipalities, and federations in promoting and developing each sport. The athletes participating in these championships not only represent their clubs and families but also the hard work behind them at the territorial and autonomous levels.

Pending Subjects and Future Goals

Canibe discussed the pending subjects of the CESA, including the need to reinforce and focus on talent detection and providing continuity to athletes throughout their careers. He also emphasized the importance of promoting the image of sport and equality, with 50% male and 50% female participation. In 2024, the championships saw almost 12,000 athletes and 3,000 officials participate, with 12,000 of them being equal in terms of gender. For Canibe, inclusion is essential, and the CSD also combines these championships with events for people with disabilities to ensure total inclusion.

Finally, Canibe stressed the significance of having the support of the Government and Minister Pilar Alegría, who is fond of sports. He believes it is fundamental to support school-age athletes and their continuity at the university level, accompanying them in all phases of their life for integral development – sports, academic, and personal. The ultimate goal is to develop well-rounded individuals who will become future leaders, representing Spain and embodying the values of sports.
