Spaniards Struggle to Identify Eco-Friendly Products

Environmental and Social Impact of Purchases

A significant majority of Spaniards, 81%, want their purchases to have a positive environmental and social impact. However, more than half, 68%, find it challenging to identify such products due to confusing sustainability messages on labels. In fact, Spaniards find it easier to cook a gourmet dinner from scratch or assemble furniture than to determine the environmental impact of products while shopping.

Understanding Sustainability Information

According to a study conducted by OnePoll for Amazon, only 18% of Spaniards perfectly understand the environmental impact information on product labels. Two-thirds of Spaniards, 67%, would like businesses to help them more easily identify products with a positive environmental and social impact.

Abandoning Purchases Due to Lack of Information

More than half of Spaniards, 54%, have abandoned a purchase at least once due to the inability to find clear information on a product’s sustainability characteristics. Additionally, 36% trust stores or brands that provide information on environmental and social credentials more than those that do not.

Factors Influencing Purchasing Decisions

Almost half of those surveyed, 44%, say that whether a product and brand align with their social and environmental values is one of the factors that most influences their purchasing decisions.

Generation Z and Sustainability Information

Generation Z is the most attentive to sustainability messages, with 54% of those surveyed between 18 and 24 years old confirming this. They are followed by 47% of Millennials, 37% of Generation X, and 29% of Baby Boomers.

Importance of Sustainability Certifications

Sustainability certifications are crucial for Spanish consumers, with more than 7 in 10 respondents, 71%, being more confident in a product’s sustainability features if backed by trusted certifications. Similarly, 67% say they are more likely to buy a product with sustainability features if supported by official certifications.

Clear and Transparent Sustainability Information

40% of those surveyed state that they would be encouraged to try a new brand or product if its sustainability characteristics are explained in a clear and transparent way.

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly Program

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program helps customers find products with certified sustainability features. The program has increased to over 1.4 million items in Amazon stores worldwide, a 157% increase from 2022.

Delia García Gómez, Chief of Sustainability and Positive Impact Spain and Portugal at L’Oréal Groupe, stated that Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly certifications support their commitment to more sustainable processes and products.
