Spain’s Law for Grandchildren: Eligibility Criteria, Application Process, and Requirements

Spanish Government Extends Deadline for Descendants of Exiled Spaniards to Acquire Citizenship

The Spanish Government has announced a one-year extension of the deadline for descendants of Spaniards exiled during the Civil War and Franco’s regime to acquire Spanish nationality, until October 2025.

Democracy Memory Law Facilitates Citizenship for Grandchildren of Spaniards

The Law of Grandchildren, also known as the Democracy Memory Law, allows grandchildren of Spaniards and their children, regardless of age or gender, to apply for citizenship in Spain. The law has been in effect for two years and over 300,000 applications have already been received.

Eligibility Criteria Expanded

The law applies to children of Spanish women born abroad who lost their nationality by marrying a foreigner before the 1978 Constitution came into force. It also applies to adult children of Spaniards who were granted nationality by virtue of the right of option.

Application Process

To apply for the grandchildren law, individuals must contact the Spanish consulate and schedule an appointment. Applicants must bring a birth certificate of their parents, a birth certificate of the person interested in receiving citizenship, and a marriage certificate of the parents or a birth certificate of the father or mother who is not Spanish.

Extension of Deadline Aims to Address Pending Requirements and New Applications

The extension of the deadline is expected to allow all pending requirements to be addressed, as well as new applicants to take advantage of this opportunity to acquire Spanish citizenship.
