E-commerce Growth in Spain
The e-commerce market in Spain has experienced significant growth, with a 12.8% year-on-year increase in turnover in the second quarter of 2024, reaching 23,114 million euros. This growth is reflected in the number of transactions, which rose by 13.7% to over 422 million.
Sector Performance
The sectors that contributed the most to this growth were travel agencies and tour operators, clothing, and air transport, accounting for 11.0%, 6.0%, and 5.9% of the total turnover, respectively. Restaurants led the ranking in terms of sales, with 7.2% of the total.
Geographic Segmentation
In terms of geographic segmentation, 43.5% of revenues were destined for Spain, while 56.4% were purchases made abroad. The net foreign balance showed a deficit of 9,872 million euros. By number of transactions, 35.8% of sales were destined for Spain and 64.1% abroad.
International Transactions
The business volume of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad was 13,047 million euros, a 14.7% increase from the previous year. The majority of these purchases (94.4%) were made in stores located in the European Union. Clothing was the branch of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain abroad, accounting for 9.3% of the total.
Sales from abroad with Spain invoiced 3,175 million euros, an 11.5% increase from the previous year. The majority of these purchases (59.8%) came from the European Union. The tourism sector accounted for 64.0% of purchases from abroad with Spain.
Domestic E-commerce
E-commerce revenues within Spain rose 9.9% year-on-year to 6,892 million euros. Public administration, taxes, and social security led the billing within Spain, accounting for 10.2% of the total.
