The Spanish male hockey team has achieved a significant victory over Australia with a score of 1-2 in the FIH Pro League. This win is attributed to the team’s solid defense and the goals scored by Pau Petchamé and Nico Álvarez. Petchamé, in particular, had a remarkable debut, scoring a crucial goal for the Spanish team. On the other hand, the women’s team faced a different outcome, losing to Australia with a score of 4-1.
In the men’s match, the Spanish team started strongly, with several attempts to score in the first quarter. Although they were unable to convert these attempts into goals initially, Petchamé eventually scored, giving Spain a 0-1 lead. The Australian team tried to equalize before the break, but their efforts were thwarted by the Spanish defense. Nico Álvarez further extended Spain’s lead to 0-2, securing a decisive advantage. Despite Australia’s late attempt to narrow the gap with a goal from Ky Willot, the Spanish team maintained their defensive solidity until the end of the game.
The women’s team, however, had a less successful outing. Following a meritorious tie against China in their previous match, the Spanish women’s team lost to Australia. The Australian team scored the first goal through Jade Smith, following a rebound from a corner penalty. Patricia Álvarez managed to equalize the score with an excellent individual play, demonstrating great control and speed to surpass the goalkeeper. However, the Australian team regained their lead in the second half, with Penny Squibb scoring from a penalty corner and Courtney Schonell adding a third goal after a defensive error by the Spanish team. Despite Spain’s efforts to reduce the deficit, Australia sealed their victory with a fourth goal from Mariah Williams.
The Spanish team will face their next challenge on Thursday, March 7, at 9:30 Spanish time.
