Spain Sees Unseasonal Shopping Surge: What’s Behind the December Boom

Footfall at shopping centers increases by +2.6% during the month of December in Spain

Recent figures indicate a rise in the number of shoppers visiting retail destinations in Spain and Portugal during the month of December.

Spain Experiences 2.6% Increase in Shopping Center Foot Traffic

According to data from Sensormatic Solutions, a leading provider of retail solutions, the number of people visiting shopping centers in Spain increased by 2.6% compared to the same period in the previous year. This rise has contributed to an annual cumulative increase of 2.1% over the past 12 months.

Portugal Sees 1.8% Growth in Shopping Center Visits

Meanwhile, in Portugal, there was a 1.8% increase in the number of customers visiting shopping centers compared to December of the previous year. This growth has resulted in an annual cumulative increase of 2.0% over the past 12 months.

Christmas Period Drives Foot Traffic, Despite Economic Caution

Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) shows that the leading indicator of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for December has risen by four tenths compared to November, resulting in an annual variation of 2.8%. The traditional increase in consumption during the Christmas period, driven by gift purchases, has likely contributed to the rise in foot traffic. However, consumer caution, given the current economic climate, appears to have moderated this growth.
