Spain, runner-up in the Wheelchair Tennis World Cup

The Spanish wheelchair tennis team was proclaimed this Sunday runner-up in the World Cup for teams that was played in Vilamoura (Portugal)losing in the final, for the second consecutive year, with the Netherlands.

The Spanish team, formed by Martín de la Puente, Dani Caverzaschi, Quico Tur and Enrique Ciscar, reached the final after initially overcoming, with full victories, the group stagein which they faced Portugal (3-0), Malaysia (2-1) and Poland (3-0).

In the semifinals, the rival was Japan, led by Shingo Kunieda, four-time Paralympic champion, whom they won 2-1. In the final, Spain met the Netherlands, which they could not win either of the two games. Dani Caverzaschi lost 3-6 and 2-6 with Ruben Spaargaren and Martín de la Puente with Tom Egberink 1-6 and 3-6.

In 2021 the Spanish team finished second after losing in the final against the Netherlands in the competition held in Sardinia (Italy). Martín de la Puente, tenth in the ITF ranking, and Dani Caverzaschi, twelfth, will make history in the coming days at Roland Garros (May 31 – June 4) as it is the first time that two Spanish Paralympic tennis players play a Grand Slam on the clay of the Paris tournament.
