Spain on the Verge of Victory: One Step Away from Beating Paris

Spain Stays Alive, Defeats Finland 81-74, Advances to Quarterfinals

In a thrilling matchup, Spain came back from the brink of elimination to defeat Finland 81-74 in the EuroBasket 2024 quarterfinals. The Spaniards’ epic comeback saw them erase a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to grab the win.

The game was a grueling affair, with both teams putting on a show of determination and clutch performances. Finland’s Gustavson and Grandison led their team to an early lead, with Spain struggling to find their footing in the first half.

However, Lorenzo Brown’s acceleration proved to be the turning point for Spain, as he drew a crazy ending to the first half with 11 straight points. Willy Hernangómez’s dominant performance on both ends of the court kept the Spanish alive, but Finland refused to give up.

The seesaw battle continued into the fourth quarter, with neither team able to gain significant momentum. With the score tied at 72-72, Spain’s Rudy Fernández grabbed a crucial rebound on a diving play, setting the stage for Willy’s decisive 2+1 to give Spain the winning margin.

"We’re not looking back, we’re looking ahead," said Willy Hernangómez in a post-game interview. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we believed in ourselves and in each other."

Coach Sergio Scariolo attributed the team’s victory to their tenacity and will to win. "My players never gave up, never lost their confidence. We are proud of this win and proud to be in the quarterfinals."

Spain’s next opponent awaits, with the quarterfinal showdown set to take place on July 5.
