Spain: nightclubs reopen in Catalonia and the Balearics, with health pass

Good news for Spanish revelers and tourists: nightclubs will be able to reopen in the early hours of Friday this October 8 in Catalonia and the Balearics, especially in Ibiza, a destination known for its nightlife. You will still have to present your health pass to enter.

The Higher Court of Justice of Catalonia on Thursday ratified the obligation of a health pass in nightclubs and karaoke in the Spanish province, which will have to respect a gauge of 70% of their capacity. The Court effectively deemed this measure “ideal” for continuing to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, because in these establishments, “due to their architectural configuration and the difficulty of maintaining a social distance with a mask, there may be have an increased risk of contagion because of the relaxation of certain precautions ”, indicated the magistrates, according to the Spanish daily El País.

In the Balearic Islands, an archipelago recognized as welcoming revelers from all over the world, the boxes will be able to reopen on Friday with a gauge of 70%, always with the obligation to present a certificate of vaccination or negative screening test. A measure that will also allow nightclubs, closed for over a year and a half, to return to activity close to normal.

Be careful, however, in both Spanish regions, wearing a mask will remain compulsory on the dance floors, except when having a drink.

Some professionals in the sector, however, complained about the late announcements of the authorities, who only confirmed the reopening of nightclubs on Tuesday, and this Thursday the obligation of the health pass. According to the Catalan Federation of Musical and Restaurant Activities, one of the employers’ unions, only 40% of establishments will open this Friday.

After being the epicenter of the pandemic at the beginning of the summer, Catalonia has seen a marked improvement in its health situation, with an incidence rate of 80 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which remains above the national average. Spain remains one of the most advanced European countries on anti-covid vaccination, with 87.4% of those over 12 years old being fully vaccinated, against 84.8% for France.
