Spain, Germany, France and the European Union (EU) condemned this Tuesday the murder in Honduras of three women of the Garífuna (black) ethnic group in an event that occurred on Sunday on a beach in the Caribbean of the Central American country.
"The EU, together with France, Germany and Spain, condemns the murders of the three Garífuna women in Puerto Cortés and all forms of violence against women and girls"wrote the European Union on Twitter.
The women were attacked by armed men when they were sitting on the shore of a beach in a Garífuna community in the Honduran Caribbean, a fact for which the Honduran authorities detained a suspect in recent hours.
Spain, Germany, France and the EU made "a call for a prompt investigation and punishment of the culprits. Tod@s, together for a life in equality and free from violence".
The multiple murder is being investigated by the Special Prosecutor for Crimes Against Life, the Technical Criminal Investigation Agency (ATIC) and the Police Investigation Directorate (DPI).
So far in 2023, around 18 women have died violently in the Central American nation, said today the director of the Violence Observatory of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), Migdonia Ayestas.
"It is alarming that every 21.3 hours a woman is losing her life" in Honduras, emphasized Ayestas, who indicated that nine of the country’s 18 departments are the most dangerous for women.
Women in Honduras, she added, "they continue to lose their lives regardless of the hypothesis without investigation and without respect for their dignity and human rights".
Ayestas asked the authorities to "investigate" these cases of violence against women, since most of these acts go unpunished.
He stressed the importance of criminal scientific investigation to "find those responsible" to commit those crimes.
