Spain: Firefighters still mobilize against fire in the south of the country

In southern Spain, thousands of hectares of forest have been decimated by a fire that has raged since 9 September. In total, more than 2,000 people have been evacuated and a 44-year-old firefighter has died.

Since September 9, Spanish firefighters have been fighting a forest fire that broke out on the Sierra Bermeja mountain, near Malaga, in the south of the country. One of them, 44 years old, was killed, trapped in the flames. Sunday, September 12, the fire regained strength, joining with a second fire. The fire is now visible from the center of the seaside town, some fifty kilometers away. More than 1,000 hectares have already gone up in smoke.

The 600 firefighters deployed are still trying to find the source of the fire, but they still hope to quickly control the disaster. “We are tired, but yesterday was a good day, it rained, it helped put out the fire in some lands”, explains one of them. More than 2,000 people have already had to be evacuated, sometimes in giant gyms. Faced with disaster, the inhabitants struggle to find words. The region had already lost nearly 65,000 hectares during the summer.
