Spain cemented its status as a dominant force in women’s football on Tuesday, successfully defending its Nations League title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Germany.
The win underscores Spain’s continued reign in the sport, coming after their triumph at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. It marks the second consecutive Nations League trophy for the Spanish side.
Sonia Bermudez, the team’s coach, secured her first international title with this victory.
Claudia Pina was instrumental in the win, scoring two goals. Young Vicky Lopez added another.
The decisive second leg of the final followed a goalless draw in the first leg played in Germany.
Pina opened the scoring in the 61st minute, cutting in from the left flank and combining with Mariona Caldentey before firing a shot past German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
Lopez extended Spain’s lead in the 68th minute. She advanced unopposed on the right, entered the penalty area, and struck a curling shot that eluded Berger’s fingertips and found the far post.
Pina sealed the victory in the 74th minute. She intercepted a defensive error, drove through midfield, and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
In the semi-finals, Spain had eliminated Sweden. Germany advanced to the final by overcoming France.
France and Sweden are competing for third place tonight, with France defending a 2-1 advantage from their first-leg match.
