Spanish Under-17 Basketball Team Dominates Philippines at World Cup, Secures Round of 16 Spot

Istanbul, Turkey – The Spanish men’s under-17 basketball team cruised to a convincing 96-34 win over the Philippines on Sunday in their second World Cup match in the under-17 category.

The team led by 28 points after the first quarter, establishing a commanding 30-2 advantage. From that point on, Spain’s dominance only grew, as four players registered ratings of over 20: Eric del Castillo with 24, Máximo García Plata with 23, Ignacio Campoy with 23, and Guillermo del Pino with 20.

Having already qualified for the round of 16, Spain opened their World Cup campaign on Saturday with an 89-63 win over Puerto Rico. With this strong start, the Spanish team, which finished runner-up in the 2022 edition, looks poised for success.

Next up, Spain faces Lithuania on Tuesday in a matchup for first place in Group A, which will be a keenly anticipated contest given Lithuania’s resounding 107-48 defeat of the Philippines and 95-80 drubbing of Puerto Rico.

Notably, the United States, who has won the under-17 World Cup six times previously, is currently undefeated with wins against France (104-81) and Guinea-Conakry (124-49), their first two matches of the tournament.
