The Women’s European Roller Hockey Championship in Paredes delivered a stark reminder of the sport’s power dynamics recently. Portugal faced a formidable opponent in Spain and ultimately succumbed to an 8-1 defeat. This result sets up a crucial quarter-final clash for the Portuguese squad against England.

Spain continued their dominant run, proving unstoppable from the very first whistle. They controlled the game completely. By halftime, they had already built an impressive 6-0 lead. This victory secured their top spot in Group A, having won all three of their matches with a perfect nine points.

Portugal finished second in Group A with six points. Italy came in third with three points, following their 5-3 win over France earlier in the day. France finished the group stage without earning any points.

The Road Ahead: Quarter-Finals Take Shape

All four teams from Group A will now advance to the quarter-finals. They will face opponents from Group B, with matchups determined by their group standings. Portugal, as the second-place team in Group A, is set to play England, who finished third in Group B.

Other matches on Wednesday also decided Group B’s final standings. Germany put on a powerful display, beating the Netherlands 13-1. Switzerland also secured a win, defeating England 4-1. These results meant Germany claimed first place in Group B with nine points. Switzerland followed in second with six points, England took third with three points, and the Netherlands ended with no points.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for Thursday and promise exciting action. The lineup includes Portugal against England, Spain facing the Netherlands, Italy battling Switzerland, and France taking on Germany.

Match Details: Spain’s Onslaught and Portugal’s Lone Strike

Playing at the Rota dos Móveis arena in Lordelo, Paredes, Portugal found themselves behind early. They had previously shown strong form, beating Italy 5-3 and France 7-2. However, Spain quickly established control. Aina Florenza was particularly sharp, scoring four goals in the first half alone, at the 5th, 7th, 19th, and 21st minutes. Marta Piquero (15th minute) and Elsa Salvaña (16th minute) also added to Spain’s tally, making it 6-0 by the break.

In the second half, Portugal managed to get on the scoreboard. Leonor Coelho netted a goal in the 30th minute. Spain, known for their relentless attack, continued to push. Marta González scored in the 44th minute, and Vitoria Porta added another in the 45th minute, sealing the 8-1 victory. Notably, this was the first goal Spain had conceded in the tournament. Spain holds an impressive record in the competition, with eight trophies, including the last seven in a row.

A Closer Contest: Italy vs. France

Earlier in the day, the match between Italy and France offered a much tighter contest. The teams were closely matched throughout. Italy went into halftime with a narrow 2-1 lead, never quite pulling away comfortably on the scoreboard.

Rebecca Tacardi opened the scoring for Italy in the 15th minute. France quickly responded, with Ninon Dubocquet equalizing in the 21st minute. Italy then regained the lead just three minutes later through Elena Tami.

In the second half, Emma Cazzola extended Italy’s lead to 3-1 in the 27th minute. Solène Cayol brought France back within one goal, making it 3-2 in the 32nd minute. Italy pushed ahead again, with Rebecca Taccardi scoring her second goal in the 37th minute. Solène Cayol found the net once more for France in the 42nd minute, keeping the final result in doubt. However, Emma Cazzola ultimately sealed Italy’s 5-3 win with a goal two minutes before the final whistle.

This Women’s European Championship, which began in 1991, uses a two-group format. The groups are arranged based on team rankings, with the four strongest teams in one group and the remaining teams in the other.
