Spain deflates

The quarterfinals were, for the second consecutive edition, the National Team’s barrier in a World Cup. After the first two dates of a sport that was still in the making, Spain, from 1996 to 2012, had always reached the final, with two titles included. Five years ago, in Colombia, the streak was broken, falling in the quarterfinals against Russia.

A complex preparation at that time and a powerful rival said goodbye. For this appointment in Lithuania, the National Team concentrated at the end of July, arriving at the tournament with more than 50 days of training. The outcome was the same: Portugal raised a 2-0 against. A team that also snatched the last European Championship from Spain, that of 2018, and that makes for the first time in history, the National Team adds three international tournaments in a row without success.

Others take a step forward (Argentina, Portugal …), but in Spain the feeling is of stagnation. “It’s time to do self-criticism,” says coach Fede Vidal. “We lacked experience,” captain Carlos Ortiz tells AS. The good thing that, after a defeat, there is always a reason to look forward, And it is that in just 112 days the European of the Netherlands starts.
