Spain and Ireland are calling on Brussels to check whether Israel is complying with its association agreement with the European Union

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asking her to do so Urgently examine whether Israel is complying with its association agreement with the European Unionparticularly with regard to respect for human rights, and proposes appropriate measures if it finds that this is not the case.

In the letter that is also signed by Irish Prime Minister Leo VaradkarBoth note that this request is made in the context of the risk of an even greater humanitarian catastrophe posed by the imminent threat of Israeli military operations in Rafah, and taking into account what has happened and continues to happen in Gaza since October 2023 widespread concern about possible violations of international humanitarian law.

Both presidents also call for not to lose sight of the imperative need for a political perspective to end the conflict and advocate the use of the two-state solution as the only way to ensure that “this vicious cycle of violence is not repeated.”

The EU, the letter continues, has a responsibility to act in coordination with the parties and the international community to make this a reality, including through an international peace conference, as agreed by the European Council on October 26.

Sánchez and Varadkar are deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in Israel and Gazaparticularly because of the impact that the ongoing conflict is having on innocent Palestinians, especially children and women.

In her opinion, the expansion of the Israeli military operation in the Rafah region represents a serious and immediate threat that the international community must urgently address.

Also remember, almost 28,000 Palestinians were killed and more than 67,000 injured and that there are more than 1.9 million displaced people (85% of the population) in the Gaza Strip.

The two presidents reiterate their full condemnation of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks and call for the immediate and unconditional release of the remaining hostages. They emphasize that Israel has the right to defend itself against such attacks, but in accordance with international law, which is obliged to ensure the protection of civilians.

They emphasize that the response must comply with the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution.
