The second legs of European playoff matches are here. Teams are fighting hard for a spot in the group stages. Officials must ensure fair play when the stakes are so high. UEFA has now named the referees for these crucial upcoming games. Erik Lambrechts, from Belgium, will oversee Sp. Braga’s home game in the Europa League playoff.
Braga will host the Lincoln Red Imps. This important game takes place on Thursday, August 28, at 8:00 PM. It will be held at the Estádio Municipal de Braga. Lambrechts leads an all-Belgian team of officials. Jo de Weirdt and Kevin Monteny will assist him. Nathan Verboomen takes on the role of fourth official. Bram Van Driessche will manage the video assistant referee (VAR) duties, with Bert Put offering support.
Sp. Braga comes into this game with a big advantage. They defeated Lincoln Red Imps 4-0 in the first leg. That match was played in the Algarve, as UEFA made the Gibraltarian side host there. Braga hopes to reach the main phase of Europe’s second club competition for the tenth time. They were finalists back in the 2010/11 season. This would be their second consecutive appearance if they succeed.
Meanwhile, Santa Clara faces a different challenge in the Conference League. Slovenian Matej Jug will be the main referee for their match. This game is against Shamrock Rovers. It also happens on Thursday, August 28, at 8:00 PM. The teams will meet at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
Jug will have a team of Slovenian officials assisting him. Matej Zunic and Manuel Vidali are his assistants. Dejan Balazic is the fourth official for the game. The VAR role is assigned to Hungary’s Tamas Bognar. He will work alongside Slovenia’s Roberto Ponis. Santa Clara needs a comeback after losing 2-1 at home to Shamrock Rovers. They hope to make their first-ever appearance in the Conference League main stage.
Beyond these key games, other officials received assignments. Portugal’s Tiago Martins will serve as the VAR for a different European fixture. He will be on duty for Steaua Bucharest’s match against Aberdeen. The Romanian team hosts the Scottish side next week. The first leg between those two teams ended in a 2-2 draw.
