The English Premier League (EPL) soccer match to be played in Southampton on Sunday was postponed after cases of persistent corona virus infection were reported in the Newcastle team. EPL provided this information. Newcastle’s previous game against Everton on Thursday was also postponed.
The Premier League said Newcastle did not have the 13 players and a goalkeeper needed to face Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium due to injuries and COVID-19 cases. The league said in a statement that in order to provide clarity to the affected clubs and their fans, they made a timely decision on the match.

With this, the number of postponed EPL games in the last three weeks has risen to 18, including Saturday’s game between Norwich and bottom-ranked Leicester. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said on Friday that three of his players tested positive before Sunday’s game against Chelsea.
Klopp did not reveal the names of the players and expressed his hope that the match will be played in London. Meanwhile, the French league match between Angers and Saint-Etienne on January 9 has been postponed due to more coronavirus cases in the Angers team.

Angers called for the match to be postponed on Thursday, saying its 30-player team had 19 confirmed cases of infection and that 10 of these players were not allowed to play again until January 10. Five members of the team’s staff are also infected.
