South Korea Power Plant Collapses During Demolition, At Least 7 Trapped

At least seven people are trapped under debris following the collapse of a decommissioned power plant during demolition preparations in Ulsan, South Korea, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.

The structure at the headquarters of Korea East-West Power in the southeastern city of Ulsan crumbled around 2:00 PM local time (0500 GMT).

The National Fire Agency of South Korea confirmed that two individuals have been rescued, but at least seven others remain unaccounted for beneath the rubble.

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has instructed all relevant agencies to mobilize personnel and equipment, stressing that the highest priority is the rescue of those trapped.

Dozens of rescue workers and firefighters are actively searching the site for survivors.

Authorities have ordered an evacuation of the surrounding area to ensure public safety.

Preliminary reports indicate the incident occurred as preparations were underway to dismantle the thermal power plant, which had ceased operations some time ago.

Officials are currently inspecting the remaining structure and investigating the cause of the collapse to prevent further incidents.

Residents in the vicinity have been advised to stay away from the affected area.
