South Africa Ends 16-Year Wait, Qualifies for FIFA World Cup 2026

South Africa has secured its return to the FIFA World Cup after a 16-year absence, clinching a spot in the 2026 tournament following a decisive victory in African qualification.

The ‘Bafana Bafana’ secured their berth with a decisive 3-0 victory over Rwanda in Mbombela on Tuesday. Goals were netted by Thalente Mbatha in the fifth minute, Oswin Appollis in the 26th, and Evidence Makgopa in the 72nd.

This marks the nation’s fourth appearance at the World Cup. Their last participation was in 2010 when they hosted the event. Previous qualifications include 1998 and 2002.

The win propelled South Africa to the top of Group C in the African qualifiers, finishing with 18 points. This outcome allowed them to overtake Benin, who had been leading the group.

The decisive match day also saw Nigeria defeat Benin 4-0. This result further solidified South Africa’s qualification and relegated Benin to third place in the group standings.

The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, featuring an expanded field of 48 national teams.

South Africa is the seventh African nation to secure qualification for the upcoming global event.
