A quiet Sunday dawn gave way to unthinkable sorrow on the IC2 in Soure. Just past 7:00 AM, near the Porto Coelheiro crossing, two cars crashed head-on. This stretch of road, lacking a central barrier, saw a tragic pile-up that shook the early morning calm.
The terrible accident claimed three lives. Two women, aged 34 and 54, died at the scene. Paramedics from the Coimbra Health Unit’s VMER team confirmed their deaths. A man, also severely injured, was quickly transported to the University Hospitals of Coimbra. Despite efforts there, he later passed away. Another person, gravely hurt, is still receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Reports suggest a shocking detail: one of the vehicles was driving against the flow of traffic. This mistake set the stage for the devastating collision. Local news outlet Correio da Manhã shared that the three people who died were related. They were Brazilian nationals, far from their homeland, on what should have been a normal day.
Emergency services reacted swiftly to the crisis. Firefighters from Soure and Condeixa-a-Nova, along with INEM medical teams and the GNR police, rushed to the scene. Their coordinated actions focused on aiding the injured and managing the wreckage. For a significant period, traffic on the IC2 was brought to a standstill as they worked.
