India’s cricket world was left stunned when Rohit Sharma suddenly announced his retirement from Test cricket. Now, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has come out in support of Rohit’s decision. Ganguly praised Rohit’s leadership skills, highlighting his success in leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy titles.
Ganguly said, “Retirement is a personal decision for a player. I think it was the right time for him to retire.” He added that Rohit has played a lot of cricket for India and wished him luck for his future projects.
A Successful Leader
Ganguly credited Rohit’s leadership skills for his success as India’s captain. “It’s not surprising that India won the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy under his captaincy,” he said. “His career has been great, and he should be proud of himself.”
Rohit’s captaincy record includes reaching the 2023 World Test Championship final and the 2023 ODI World Cup final, although India lost both times to Australia. In Test cricket, Rohit played 67 matches, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 fifties.
Struggling with Form
Rohit’s decision to retire from Test cricket was partly due to his poor form. Under his captaincy, India suffered heavy losses to New Zealand and Australia, missing out on the World Test Championship final. In his last 15 Test innings across three series, Rohit managed just 164 runs.
