Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz homered, and the Washington Nationals produced the shortest start of Tylor Megill’s career, beating the New York Mets 8-3 on Wednesday.

Soto hit a two-run homer during a five-run drive in the first inning and Cruz, who entered the game batting .170 with three homers, hit his 453rd career homer, a three-run shot in the second, which sent the ball 436 feet.

Megill (4-2) walked the next enemy and that was the end of his day. He got four outs and allowed eight runs on eight hits, one walk and one hit batter. He lost his second straight start and his ERA shot up from 2.43 to 4.41. His shortest outing had been Sept. 15, when he retired three innings in which he gave up six runs in a loss to St. Louis.

With a big lead, Aaron Sanchez (2-2) attacked the strike zone and retired the third inning on 11 pitches, the fourth on 10 and the fifth with just six. He didn’t strike out a single foe until he fanned Francisco Lindor to start the sixth.

Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer in the first inning, giving the Mets a 3-0 lead that quickly disappeared.

For the Nationals, the Dominicans Nelson Cruz 3-1 with three RBIs and two runs scored; Soto 4-1 with two RBIs and one scored; Maikel Franco 3-0 with one produced; Victor Robles 4-0. Venezuelans César Hernández 4-3 with two runs scored; Keibert Ruiz 4-2 with one produced and one scored. Cuban Yadiel Hernández 3-1 with a run scored.

For the Mets, Dominican Starling Marte 4-1 with a run scored. Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor 4-0; Tomas Nido 3-0. The Venezuelans Luis Guillorme 4-2; Eduardo Escobar 4-1.
