The PlayStation Plus subscription service allows users to play various games on their console without having to purchase them individually. Up until now, subscribers have been able to access both PS4 and PS5 games as part of their membership. However, this is expected to change in the near future.
In a recent blog post about the monthly PlayStation Plus titles, Sony announced that it plans to limit the availability of PS4 titles in the subscription service. Starting from January 2026, the PlayStation Plus game catalog will primarily feature PS5 titles. According to Sony, “Many of our players are currently playing on the PS5 and have started to redeem and access PS5 titles from the monthly games and the game catalog. PlayStation Plus will follow this development and will focus on offering PS5 titles as part of the monthly games and the game catalog from January 2026.”
Sony also explained that with the shift in focus to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a major part of the service and will only be offered occasionally as part of the monthly games and game catalog. However, users will still be able to access titles that can be played on both PS4 and PS5 after this date. It’s worth noting that this change does not affect the monthly PS4 games that users have already redeemed via PlayStation Plus, and they will continue to have access to these games as long as their membership remains active.
The games for PS4 from the game catalog will also continue to be available for playing until they are removed from the catalog as part of the monthly update. This development marks the end of the PS4 era, and users who have not yet upgraded to a PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Pro may want to consider doing so soon. Although PS4 games will not be completely discontinued, they will only be available occasionally, and the focus will be on PS5 titles. Users who have already acquired PS4 games through PS Plus will be able to keep and continue playing them as long as their subscription continues.
