Sony FX2 Cinema Line Camera Launched for Pro Creators, Future Filmmaker Awards.

The filmmaking world just got a fresh perspective with the launch of Sony’s new FX2 camera. This latest addition to the Cinema Line is designed for today’s creators. It offers top-tier video quality and also captures high-resolution still photos. This is a big step up from traditional digital cinema cameras, which often fall short on detailed still imaging and color control.

The FX2 is a perfect fit for film sets, small production teams, and individual content creators. It helps them shoot both moving and still images efficiently. Plus, it keeps colors consistent across every shot. This makes it ideal for feature films, social media videos, and even turning stills into advertising materials like posters or billboards.

Its compact size, simple yet flexible controls, and complete features make the FX2 a great starting point in the Cinema Line. It especially appeals to users of popular cameras like the Alpha 7 IV who want to step up to a dedicated cinema camera. This includes film and digital media students, video creators aiming for cinematic quality, and small production crews needing high-end video on a reasonable budget.

Sony is also giving creators worldwide a chance to shine on an international stage. The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2026 is now open for short film entries. It costs nothing to enter. This program offers a valuable opportunity to improve skills, learn from pros, and connect with the global film industry. Submissions close on December 16, 2025.

Full-Frame Video and Stills in One Camera

The FX2 comes with a full-frame sensor for sharp, beautiful images. It creates that sought-after soft background blur, or bokeh, just like other Cinema Line cameras. Inside, it has a backside-illuminated Exmor R™ sensor with 33.0 megapixels. This sensor offers a wide 15+ stops of dynamic range when using S-Log3. It captures impressive detail in both bright and shadowy areas.

The camera also features Dual Base ISO settings at 800 and 4000 for S-Log3. This helps it perform well in various lighting conditions. For video, you can boost the ISO up to 102,400, which is great for shooting in very low light.

The FX2 supports many video recording formats for maximum flexibility. It can record 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra and XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24.00p. Thanks to its built-in cooling system, it manages heat well. This allows for continuous shooting up to 13 hours at 4K 60p. You can also adjust frame rates as needed. It shoots 4K at up to 60 frames per second for 2.5x slow-motion. For Full HD, it goes up to 120 frames per second, creating up to 5x slow-motion effects.

The FX2 offers flexible workflow options. You can shoot in Log mode using Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO. It supports up to 16 user LUTs for accurate video previews right on the camera during filming. It’s easy to get a cinematic look directly from the camera. You can use the S-Cinetone™ setting by default, along with various Picture Profiles and Creative Looks. The camera also has a desqueeze display function for 1.3x and 2.0x anamorphic lenses. This helps you frame shots more accurately and easily.

Easier to Use, Perfect for Solo Creators

The FX2 features a compact, flat-top design, similar to the Cinema Line’s FX3 and FX30 models. This makes it easy to handle for professional shoots and smaller teams. The camera has three built-in 1/4-20 UNC mounting points. This means you can use it without a cage and mount it flexibly on tripods. This gives you more freedom to set up your gear. The camera also comes with an XLR-H1 handle. This makes shooting much easier, especially when holding the camera by hand or moving dynamically. It’s lightweight and easy to carry, measuring 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm and weighing around 679 grams. This makes it ideal for solo filmmakers or small teams.

The camera also features an improved Real-time Recognition AF focus system. This system detects faces and objects more accurately. It intelligently tracks people, animals, birds, vehicles, and insects. An Auto mode even lets the system automatically pick the subject type. Features like Focus Breathing Compensation and AF Assist are included. You can also fine-tune focus transition speed and sensitivity. This helps creators control focus precisely and achieve professional, cinematic results.

For handheld video, the camera includes Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode. These are new to the Cinema Line series. They help stabilize footage without needing a gimbal. The Auto Framing feature automatically frames and tracks your subject, even when the camera is on a tripod. It keeps people naturally centered in the shot. The Framing Stabiliser function helps keep the subject in the same spot within the frame. This is great for dynamic shots.

For still photography, the FX2 has a new ‘Log shooting’ menu. It captures high-resolution 33-megapixel images. These can be color-graded in post-production, just like video footage. This ensures still images match the mood and tone of your video projects. The MOVIE/STILL switch lets you change modes quickly. Plus, the Fn button can be held down to instantly select shooting modes.

Updated Hardware, Familiar Feel

To make filming more immersive and flexible, the FX2 includes a high-resolution 3.68 million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF). This EVF tilts and is designed for video work. Its deep view makes it easy to use. The 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD also helps you frame shots from any angle. The camera has well-placed control buttons on both the body and around the grip. A Tally light shows recording status. The "BIG6" display is customizable, showing information like frame rate (FPS), ISO, shutter speed (angle/speed), aperture, Look preset, white balance, and ND filter status.

The FX2 supports vertical video. It also displays vertical information during recording. The ILME-FX2 model, which comes with the handle, has two XLR/TRS ports and a 3.5mm microphone jack. This allows for professional-grade 4-channel, 24-bit digital audio recording.

For connectivity, the FX2 has an HDMI Type-A port. This port outputs high-quality 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit and 16-bit RAW video. This is essential for professional recording and monitoring. It also features dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and LAN connectivity through a compatible adapter. This makes data transfer and remote camera control simple. The camera includes a USB Type-C® port supporting SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps and USB Power Delivery (PD). It also has USB streaming and built-in network streaming for smooth remote production workflows.

Environmental and Accessibility Goals

The FX2 was developed with Sony’s "Road to Zero" concept in mind. This is Sony’s long-term goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The camera is made in factories that use 100% renewable energy. This shows Sony’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and promoting sustainability in all production stages.

The FX2 is also designed to be accessible and easy for everyone to use. This is especially true for users with visual impairments. It includes helpful features like Screen Reader and Display Magnification for various menus. Its controls are user-friendly and easy for all skill levels. For example:

  • The Real-time Recognition focus system reduces the need for manual adjustments.
  • The touchscreen allows direct access to menus.
  • Distinctive tactile control buttons are easy to tell apart by touch.

This inclusive design makes the FX2 a professional creative tool. It gives all creators a chance to show their full potential, free from physical or technical limits.
