Sony Ends PS4 and PS4 Pro Sales in Japan Amid PS5 Focus

The PS4’s impressive run is coming to an end. After a lackluster performance by its predecessor, the PS3, which failed to meet sales expectations and lost to Nintendo’s Wii, the PS4 managed to turn things around for Sony. It’s been 12 years since the console first hit the market in 2013.

In a sign of the times, the Japanese PlayStation website has announced that it will stop shipping PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles to retailers in Japan. Although Sony hasn’t made an official statement, it’s likely that the PS4 is being discontinued worldwide. The current console on the market, the PS5, is nearly five years old, which is considered old in the gaming world.

New games like GTA 6 and Death Stranding 2 will be released exclusively on the PS5, leaving little incentive for Sony to continue producing the PS4. Even though popular games like Fortnite and Call of Duty still have PS4 versions, the writing is on the wall. With rumors of the PlayStation 6 launching in 2028, it’s no surprise that the PS4’s time is up.
